Usiminas Mecanica to perform maintenance at Gerdau blast furnaces

Usiminas Mecanica, a subsidiary of Brazilian flats steelmaker Usiminas, will perform maintenance at Gerdau’s blast furnaces in Ouro Branco, Minas Gerais state, SteelOrbis has learned.

Usiminas said that due to contractual terms it could not provide further details. Gerdau did not respond to a request for comment.

Local media said Usiminas would hire about 800 people for cleaning the blast furnaces in Gerdau’s mill in Ouro Branco, Minas Gerais. The maintenance is expected take up to five months.

The Ouro Branco is Gerdau’s largest mill in Brazil, with a 4.5 million mt/year crude steel capacity.
