US wire rod imports drop 8.2 percent in April

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of wire rod totaled 138,723 mt in April 2017, down 8.2 percent from March but up 19.4 percent from April 2016 levels. By value, wire rod imports totaled $80.2 million in April 2017, compared to $88.3 million in the previous month and $56.6 million in the same month last year.
 
The US imported the most wire rod from Canada in April, with 33,396 mt, compared to 40,508 mt in March and 34,328 mt in April 2016. Other top sources of imported wire rod in April include Ukraine, with 15,787 mt; Russia, with 15,154 mt; Turkey, with 14,465 mt; Italy, with 13,542 mt; and Japan, with 10,854 mt.
