US Steel announced Thursday it plans to restart its Keetac iron ore facility in Minnesota in mid-December, according to local news reports.

The company said in a statement that it is “encouraged by the increase in demand” at its steel mills, and the restart will “ensure that we have sufficient iron ore supply where it is needed to meet that demand.”

The company said it expects to fill nearly 400 positions as part of the restart, and will work with the United Steelworkers union to recall employees that were laid off during the plant’s idling in May following pandemic shutdowns.
