According to the most recent data from the America Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), for the week ending on April 8, 2017, US domestic raw steel production was 1,703,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 73.0 percent. Production was 1,698,000 net tons in the week ending April 8, 2016 while the capability utilization then was 72.6 percent. The current week’s production represents a 0.3 percent increase from the same period in the previous year.
Production for the week ending April 8, 2017 is up 0.7 percent from the previous week ending April 1, 2017, when production was 1,692,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 71.4 percent.
Adjusted year-to-date production through April 8, 2017 was 24,254,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 74.3 percent. That is up 3.8 percent from the 23,355,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 71.6 percent.
Broken down by districts, the production for the week ending April 8, 2017 in thousands of net tons is as follows: North East: 188; Great Lakes: 627; Midwest: 168; Southern: 643 and Western: 77 for a total of 1703.
