US iron and steel scrap exports up 15.8% in May over April

According to the statistics released by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC), in May this year exports of iron and steel scrap from the US amounted to 1.55 million mt, increasing by 15.78 percent from April, but down 27.7 percent compared to May 2013. The value of these exports increased by 18.99 percent compared to April, but decreased by 26.07 percent year on year, amounting to $629.66 million.

Meanwhile, in the first five months of this year, exports of iron and steel scrap from the US totaled 6.32 million mt, decreasing by 25.75 percent year on year.

In May, Turkey was the leading scrap export destination of the US, importing 441,078 mt, decreasing by 36.95 percent compared to May 2013 and indicating a 36.6 percent rise month on month. Turkey was followed by Taiwan and South Korea, which respectively received 373,101 mt and 90,017 mt of scrap from the US in the given month. Meanwhile, Turkey was also the leading scrap export destination of the US in the first five months, receiving 1.48 million mt, down 38.28 percent year on year.
