US iron and steel scrap exports down 23.5% in H1

According to the statistics released by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC), in June this year exports of iron and steel scrap from the US amounted to 1.27 million mt, decreasing by 28.05 percent from May and down 9.53 percent compared to June 2013. The value of these exports decreased by 16.45 percent compared to May and declined by 9.86 percent year on year, amounting to $526.07 million.

Meanwhile, in the first half of this year, exports of iron and steel scrap from the US totaled 7.6 million mt, decreasing by 23.45 percent year on year.

In June, Turkey was the leading scrap export destination of the US, importing 304,301 mt, decreasing by 31.01 percent compared to May and indicating an 8.69 percent rise year on year. Turkey was followed by Taiwan and India, which respectively received 206,318 mt and 119,209 mt of scrap from the US in the given month. Meanwhile, Turkey was also the leading scrap export destination of the US in the first half, receiving 1.78 million mt, down 34.66 percent year on year.

On the other hand, according to the statistics released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in the first half of this year Turkey's scrap imports from the US totaled 1.93 million mt, down 28.5 percent year on year, reflecting a divergence between the TUIK and the US ITC data.
