According to US trade numbers published by WorldCity, in the January-August 2017 period, the top six markets for US ferrous scrap exports in dollar value were China ($567 million), Turkey ($515 million), Taiwan ($321 million), Mexico ($317 million) India ($178 million), and Pakistan ($172 million). The total exports increased 33 percent from $2.25 billion in the eight-month period in 2016 compared to $2.99 billion in the same period in 2017. The only top-six destination that decreased its imports during the period was India, declining 6 percent.
From the $2.99 billion total in value during the period, 60 percent or $1.79 billion of all US ferrous scrap exports through August were shipped from the top five customs districts: Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Boston and Seattle. The top 10 customs districts shipped $2.3 billion or 80 percent of the total for the period, with 41 percent of that value shipping from the West coast, 30 percent from the East coast, and 8 percent from Texas.
