According to a statement released by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (DCUD), in 2011 Turkey's crude steel production reached 34.1 million mt, up by 17 percent year on year, leading to a rise of 22 percent year on year in scrap consumption to 30.79 million mt in the given year.

While Turkey imported 76 percent of its total scrap consumption in 2010, this percentage decreased to 71 percent in 2011. In the year in question, Turkey's domestic scrap supply rose by 54 percent year on year to 9.33 million mt, with a value of $4.24 billion.

The DCUD statement also predicts that Turkish scrap consumption will continue to grow in the coming years, considering that the new steel production facilities being built in the country will all use electric arc furnaces.
