Turkey-based integrated steelmaker Tosyalı Holding, which focuses on green steel investments, has signed an agreement with Libya United Steel Company for Iron and Steel Industry (SULB) to expand its presence in North Africa, according to media reports. Within the scope of the agreement, a new company named Tosyalı-SULB has been established in Benghazi, Libya.

Tosyalı-SULB will build the world’s largest direct reduced iron plants with a total annual capacity of 8.1 million mt in Benghazi. The plants, which will have MIDREX Flexi DRI technology, will contribute to green steel production by operating with hydrogen.

The new company’s project will consist of three phases, and it is reported that preparations have begun for investments in the first phase of the project, which is planned to have an annual capacity of 2.7 million mt. The plants will meet both the region’s and Europe’s hot briquetted iron needs for green steel production.
