The Turkish steelmaker Habaş has requested German plantmaker SMS Siemag to supply a continuous slab caster and a hot strip mill. The new facilities are being built in Aliağa on the Turkish Aegean coast and are to go into operation at the end of 2013. Habaş will thereby be moving into the production of flat products.

The two-strand continuous slab caster is designed for an annual production of 2.5 million mt and will produce slabs in thicknesses of 200 mm and 225 mm and in widths of 1,000 mm to 2,100 mm.

In the first construction stage, the compact hot strip mill is designed for annual production of 2.5 million mt of hot strip. The capacity can be gradually expanded to 4.5 million mt per year. The strip widths vary between 700 mm and 2,100 mm and the strip gages will be between 1.2 mm and 25.4 mm. With the mill, Habaş will be able to produce a wide range of carbon steels and multiphase steels as well as pipe grades up to strength class X80.

Currently, Habaş is capable of producing three million mt of liquid steel in its meltshop and its product range includes steel billet, rebar with an annual capacity of 1.9 million mt and wire rod with a capacity of 500,000 mt per year.
