MMK-Atakas, a Turkish joint venture steel project developed by the Russian steelmaker Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) and the Turkey-based Atakas Group of Companies, has produced 156,000 mt of finished steel products in 2010, registering a 373 percent year-on-year increase following the commissioning and ramp-up of its major production facilities, MMK has said in a report.
In February 2010, MMK-Atakas commissioned its color coating line, and in April 2010 it commissioned its hot dip galvanizing line. At the same time, the captive sea port of MMK-Atakas in Iskenderun, the biggest private sea port in Turkey, started operations. Construction works have also been completed at the cold rolling shop, scrap yard, water preparation shop and power station. In October 2010, MMK-Atakas commissioned its cold rolling mill.
All the outstanding production facilities of MMK-Atakas in Iskenderun and in Istanbul are planned to be commissioned in 2011, allowing MMK to strengthen its footprint in the Middle Eastern market.
