On October 27, German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp AG announced that the first shipment of 10,000 mt of steel slabs from the company's Santa Cruz, Brazil-based integrated iron and steel mill ThyssenKrupp CSA Siderúrgica do Atlântico has arrived at Walsum port in Duisburg, Germany.

ThyssenKrupp's new integrated mill, the construction of which commenced four years ago, began producing slabs at the start of September this year.

After the full ramp-up, the mill will produce a total of five million metric tons of high-quality, low-cost slabs a year. It is scheduled to reach full capacity at the end of fiscal year 2011-12. Three million metric tons of the total annual capacity will go to the ThyssenKrupp processing plant currently under construction near Mobile in Alabama, US, while two million metric tons will be shipped to ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe's plants in Germany for processing into finished products for European customers.

"The investment project is of central importance to ThyssenKrupp's growth strategy for premium carbon steel flat products in Europe and North America," stated ThyssenKrupp CEO Dr. Ekkehard Schulz.
