On June 6, Tata Steel Europe, the European division of India-based Tata Steel which is one of the world's top 10 steel producers, announced that it has begun to build a new research center in Middlesbrough, northeast England, UK, within the scope of the memorandum of understanding signed with Redcar, UK-based Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) in October 2010.

The facility will advance high-temperature technologies and cost a total of £5 million to establish. Orders for hi-tech industrial equipment worth £2.5 million have already been placed by the recently appointed management team for the research center. The project will receive £2.5m from regional development authorities, while Tata Steel and CPI will invest the remaining £2.5m.

Technologists in the center will pioneer new ways of turning waste products into fuels and raw materials which are crucial for industries such as energy generation, construction, steel and waste management. The center is expected to be launched in spring 2012.
