Taiwan scrap imports hit 2.18 million mt in January-August

In 2017, Taiwan imported 2.67 million mt of ferrous scrap. According to Taiwan’s custom data, Taiwan imported 2.18 million mt of ferrous scrap in the January-August period, or 82 percent of the 2017 period total which translates to a monthly average rate of 0.273 million mt in 2018 compared to the lower 0.223 million mt in 2017.

Of the total, 0.99 million mt was from the US (45 percent), 0.32 million mt from Japan (15 percent), 0.11 million mt from Australia (5 percent), 0.10 million mt from Hong Kong (5 percent), 0.08 million mt from Canada (4 percent), 0.08 million mt from the Dominican Republic (4 percent), and 0.50 million mt from other countries (23 percent). In August, imports were reportedly at 0.228 million mt, down 23 percent from 0.295 in the same month the previous year.
