Summary of output of China’s key large and medium steel producers in August

In the month of August China's finished steel production observed a year-on-year decrease of 0.2 percent - the first such decline registered in the last ten years. In addition, China's pig iron output for the same month saw a drop of 1.5 percent compared to August 2007, with national crude steel output rising by just 1.3 percent.

In August, among the sixty-seven key large and medium scale producers listed by the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), the total output of pig iron was 31.3431 million mt, up 1.1243 million mt or 3.7 percent year on year; their average output on a daily basis was 1.0111 million mt, down 14,600 mt or 1.4 percent month on month. Meanwhile, the output of these sixty-seven producers accounted for 78.3 percent of China's total pig iron output in August, up 2.6 percentage points month on month and up 3.9 percentage points year on year.

With regard to crude steel, the output of these sixty-seven producers in August was 33.948 million mt, up 405,300 mt or 1.2 percent year on year; their average output on a daily basis was 1.0951 million mt, down 32,400 mt or 2.9 percent month on month. Meanwhile, the output of these producers in the month in question accounted for 79.8 percent of China's total crude steel output, up 1.9 percentage points month on month and neutral year on year.

As for finished steel, the output of the sixty-seven producers in question in August was 30.6344 million mt, down 73,900 mt or 0.2 percent year on year; their average output on a daily basis was 988,200 mt, down 44,100 mt or 4.3 percent month on month. Meanwhile, the output of these 67 producers accounted for 64.1 percent of China's total finished steel output in August, up 1.4 percentage points month on month and neutral year on year.
