Egypt-based steelmaker Suez Steel has set a new benchmark in energy-efficient DRI production at its Direct Reduction Plant based on ENERGIRON Zero-Reformer technology developed by Italian plantmaker Danieli Technologies and Tenova, the first large-scale industrial application of the solution.

The company said the plant is operating with high metallization rates while also ensuring direct hot feeding to the meltshop. The ENERGIRON ZR process, jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli, enables flexible gas-based reduction of iron ore pellets with high metallization and a compact plant footprint.

According to the announcement, Suez Steel has consistently achieved natural gas consumption slightly below 2.2 Gcal/mt, for several months through continuous optimization and operating experience.

The company added that the recently commissioned captive pellet plant has played a key role in these results by supplying high-quality pellets with optimal reducibility, supporting stable and efficient DRP operations.
