In its quarterly results press release, Steel Dynamics said it is maintaining plans to open a new $1.9 billion EAF flat roll steel mill in mid-2021. Construction on the project began in January 2020.

The facility, located in Sinton, Texas, will have an annual capacity of 3 million tons, producing Advanced High Strength Steel grades. The plant will also feature value-added finishing lines, including a galvanizing line with an annual capacity of 550,000 tons, and a paint line with an annual coating capacity of 250,000 tons. The product offering is anticipated to include various flat roll steel products, including hot roll, cold roll, galvanized, Galvalume and painted steel, primarily serving the energy, automotive, construction, and appliance sectors.

“We remain excited about this strategic project, and the associated long-term value creation it will bring through geographic and value-added product diversification,” Mark D. Millett, President and Chief Executive Officer, said in a press release.
