Spanish steelmakers association Unesid has asked the European Union to take measures against trade diversion because of the Section 232 duties the US has implemented.

Unesid president Bernardo Velázquez said that the main concern is Turkey since the country is the closest and exports most to the European Union with a seven percent share in the EU’s total steel imports. Other countries that pose a threat of trade diversion for the EU are China, India, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, according to Unesid.

Meanwhile, Spanish steel producers have also asked for a reduction in electricity prices, indicating that electricity prices in Spain are 30 percent more expensive than in France and 50 percent more than in Germany, making the Spanish steel industry less competitive.
