South Korea surpasses China for shipbuilding orders in 2011

Shipbuilding orders received by South Korea in 2011 ranked first in the world, exceeding the volume of orders received by China, as reported by global shipping services provider Clarksons.

Shipbuilding orders received by South Korea in 2011 totaled 13.554 million compensated gross tons (cgt), far exceeding the 9.202 million cgt registered by China
 
Influenced by the negative economic environment, orders received by the global shipbuilding industry fell to 28.113 million cgt in 2011, equivalent to 70 percent of the volume recorded in 2010. In 2011, shipbuilding orders received by China were less than half the 19.58 million cgt recorded in 2010, while the shipbuilding orders of South Korea, on the contrary, saw an increase from 12.629 million cgt in 2010.
