Russian Smart-Group is planning to invest $1 billion in the modernization of the Ukrainian steel producer Makeevsk Metallurgical Plant (Makeevsk). A spokesperson for Makeevsk has disclosed in an interview given to SteelOrbis that the current investment will be directed towards the construction of a new agglomerate workshop - with production capacity of 5.3 million metric tons a year, the building of a new blast furnace - with daily production capacity of 6,000-7,000 metric tons of crude steel, and towards the modernization of the current smelting facilities, including the construction of two continuous billet casters. Currently, Makeevsk is holding talks with leading equipment suppliers, such as SMS Demag and Siemens Industrial Solution and Service Group (I&S) for the supply of the necessary equipment. However, Makeevsk has not yet concluded a supply agreement with any of these companies, the mill's representative pointed out.
