On January 13, 2011, Chinese steel producer Shougang Group held a ceremony to mark the end of steel production at its facilities in the Shijingshan district of Beijing.

Shougang Group had commenced steel production in the Shijingshan district as far back as 1919. It has recently relocated its main production base to the Caofeidian coastal district near Beijing.

Shougang Group chairman Zhu Jimin commented that the halting of production at Shijingshan marks an important turning point for the group. The group's premises in Shijingshan covering 8.56 square kilometers will be redeveloped. Shougang Group will also increasingly focus on industries such as high-end metal, high-end equipment manufacturing, auto parts, and others, Mr. Zhu said.
