Scrap import to Vietnam up 9 percent in 2017

According to customs data for the country, Vietnam imported 3.91 million mt of ferrous scrap in 2017. Compared to 3.59 million mt the previous year, scrap imports increased by 9 percent.

As an emerging market, the increase in scrap imports is attributed to an increase in steel production in Vietnam.

Imports from Japan were 1.52 million mt (39 percent), Hong Kong 0.69 million mt (18 percent), US 0.61 million mt (16 percent), Australia 0.55 million mt (14 percent), Singapore 0.19 million mt (5 percent), New Zealand 0.10 million mt (3 percent), Philippines 0.08 million mt (1 percent), and other sources 0.17 million mt (4 percent).
