As reported by local customs authorities, the port of Rizhao in China's Shandong Province saw a sharp rise in its volume of iron ore imports in 2009, registering a total of 78.927 million mt, up 49.4 percent year on year, which was the largest iron ore import volume of all Chinese ports during the year in question.

With business affected by the international financial crisis, the local customs authorities at Rizhao successfully introduced measures to boost trade and to reduce difficulties for enterprises using the port. Meanwhile, the port's iron ore import volume also grew rapidly on the back of the Chinese government's policy of stimulating domestic demand, which had a positive impact of the domestic iron and steel industry.
