Qatar Steel orders new EAF steelmaking plant from Siemens VAI

State-owned Qatar Steel has announced that it has ordered a new steelmaking plant to be built adjacent to its existing plants in Mesaieed in order to increase the overall production of the company to satisfy the rising demand in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

According to a contract signed on March 8, the new plant, which will have an annual capacity of 1.1 million mt, will be supplied by Austrian plantmaker Siemens VAI and is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2013. The signing ceremony, which was held at Qatar Steel's Doha office, was attended by senior delegates from both companies.

Qatar Steel said that the plant will have an electric arc furnace (EAF), a ladle furnace and a six-strand high-speed billet caster coupled with a sophisticated fume extraction system for negligible emission.
