North Carolina-based Nucor Steel Corp. announced in a news release Thursday its plans to install a plate heat treating facility at its Hertford County, North Carolina plate mill.
The US$110 million project will add a heat treat line to the Hertford plate mill with an estimated capacity of 120,000 net tons per year. The line will have the ability to produce heat treated plate from 3/16 inch through 2 inch thick. Installation will begin after resolution of regulatory approvals and finalization of contracts.
Nucor's Chairman, CEO, and President, Dan DiMicco, commented, "The addition of the heat treat facility at Nucor Steel, Hertford County is an important first step in enabling the Nucor plate group to expand its value-added product mix."
Currently, Nucor's Hertford County plate mill has an annual production capacity of 1.6 million net tons. Nucor's combined plate capacity is 2.8 million net tons, including tonnage from the company's other plate mill in Alabama.
