Nucor seeks Memphis for new SBQ mill
Memphis is expected to be the city of choice for Nucor Corp. to build their $230 million Special Bar Quality (SBQ) mill. A preliminary approval was given by a Memphis industrial development panel for a $24.7 million tax break package to Nucor Corp. Memphis, Tennessee is competing with at least four other cities for the $230 million mill, but believes they have a good chance because of Nucor's existing properties in the area. Nucor's SBQ mill is expected to produce 850,000 tons of high quality carbons and alloy rounds for the automotive and heavy equipment industries annually. Nucor, the nation's second-largest steel manufacturer, expects to employ 225 workers paying about $67,897 on average.
