NLMK releases Q3 2008 production and sales results

The Russian steelmaker Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) has issued the third quarter 2008 production and sales results for itself and its subsidiaries.

Accordingly, in the third quarter of 2008 NLMK produced 2.214 million mt of pig iron - down 0.8 percent, 2.296 million mt of crude steel - up 2.9 percent, 985,000 mt of slabs - up 14 percent, 430,000 mt of hot rolled products - down 16.4 percent, 401,000 mt of cold rolled products - up 24.5 percent, 129,000 mt of HDG - up 5.5 percent, 101,000 mt of pre-painted steel - up 2.9 percent, 94,000 mt of dynamo steel - down 1.5 percent, and 44,000 mt of transformer steel - up 46.5 percent, all compared to July-September 2007.

During Q3 of 2008, NLMK sold 158,000 mt of pig iron - down 10.8 percent, 927,000 mt of slabs - up 6.5 percent, 416,000 mt of hot rolled products - down 15.1 percent, 411,000 mt of cold rolled products - up 30.8 percent, 120,000 mt of HDG - down 1.5 percent, 99,000 mt of pre-painted steel - down one percent, 93,000 mt of dynamo steel - down 1.5 percent, and 45,000 mt of transformer steel - up 36.8 percent, all compared to the same quarter of last year.

During the period in question, NLMK's Danish subsidiary DanSteel A/S saw a decrease in its heavy plate sales by 10.8 percent year on year to 104,000 metric tons.

VIZ-Stal registered an one percent increase in its transformer steel sales and an 89.1 percent decrease in its dynamo steel sales year on year to 48,000 mt and to 1,000 mt respectively in the third quarter of 2008.

NLMK's iron ore subsidiary Stoilensky GOK showed a seven percent increase in its iron ore concentrate sales and a 23.6 percent decrease in its sinter ore sales year on year in July-September 2008. The respective figures in metric tons were 2.929 million and 352,000.

During the period in question, Altai-koks sold 872,000 metric tons of coke (dry), showing a 0.4 percent year on year decrease.

In the third quarter of 2008, Maxi-Group's sales of billets decreased by 10.8 percent, its sales of rebar increased by 36.2 percent and its scrap sales (including sales within Maxi-Group) by 71.6 percent year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 178,000, 274,000, and 898,000. The company sold 62,000 mt of wire rod during the period in question.

Finally, Steel Invest and Finance (SIF), an affiliated company in which NLMK has a 50 percent share, increased its semis sales by 19.8 percent, its heavy plate sales by 19.6 percent, its pre-painted steel sales by 84.5 percent, its longs sales by 2.9 percent, but decreased its HR steel sales by two percent and its CR steel sales by 5.2 percent year on year in the third quarter of 2008. The respective figures in metric tons were 141,000, 211,000, 291,000, 60,000, 486,000 and 161,000.
