Chinese steelmaker NanJing Iron & Steel Co., Ltd has succeeded in trial-producing 38CrMoAl steel possessing the highest content level of aluminum in China. In October 2008, the company sold more than 500 mt of the steel product in question.

With aluminum content as high as 0.7-1.1 percent, high-aluminum 38CrMoAl steel is mainly applied in aviation, conventional weapons and in the mechanical manufacturing industries. The steel in question is one of the most difficult alloy constructional steels to produce by continuous casting. Since nozzles are liable to clog during continuous casting, the aluminum and silicon contents in the product are unstable and difficulties are experienced with continuous casting mold fluxes.

Currently, China's domestic production 38CrMoAl steel is mainly produced via die casting and the resulting products are relatively poor in quality. The New Products R&D Center of NanJing Iron & Steel and its electric furnace mill have succeeded in solving the key technical problems related to production via continuous casting. In tests the trial-produced 38CrMoAl steel has met the requirements of the various quality indexes. The product in question has been positively received by users, and the producer currently has a monthly order volume of around 1,000 mt.
