In a statement issued on the website of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOC), MOC spokesman Yao Jian said that China has become the biggest victim of the global financial crisis due to the rise in US trade protectionism.

The statement follows recent US decisions to impose antidumping duties on electric blankets and wire trays from China and in the context of the US antidumping and anti-subsidy probe into Chinese steel drill pipes.

Mr. Yao declared that the stable development of Sino-US economic and trade relations are seriously affected by this trade protectionism, adding that the US should understand the seriousness of the problem and fulfill its commitments to maintain the economic and trade relations between China and the US.

The MOC spokesman said the Chinese government insists on an open market, and remarked that US exports to China reached $77.4 billion in 2009, with the US trade deficit with China falling by 16 percent year on year. He also stressed that trade protectionism posed a threat to economic recovery.
