MMK’s plate rolling mill 5000 to work at full capacity in coming months

The Russian steel producer Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) is continuing to increase the capacity utilization level at its new plate rolling mill 5000 located in its new flat rolling shop No. 9, which in February this year produced 82,000 mt of hot rolled steel products, of which 70,000 mt have been delivered to customers.
 
Accordingly, the flat rolling shop No. 9 went through the first winter since its commissioning without any breakdown and without experiencing any difficulties. The plate rolling mill 5000 has mastered the unique process of high- and low-temperature rolling, as well as the rolling process for sheets of various thicknesses and widths, considering customers' maximum demands for large diameter pipes. Since February, the mill also produces plates of X70 strength. High quality slabs are provided to the mill from MMK's 1.6 million mt capacity continuous slab caster No. 6, commissioned at the end of the last year.
 
The main consumers of MMK's plate rolling mill 5000 are the Russian pipe producing companies TMK's Volzhsky Pipe Plant, OMK's Vyksa Steel Works, domestic machine building companies, and boiler and shipbuilding companies. These companies have been increasing the amounts of their purchases from month to month.
 
Meanwhile, MMK continues to develop the technology at the plate mill. Up to April, the operation of the unit will be under the observation of specialists from the German engineering group SMS-Siemag, the main supplier of the mill's equipment.  MMK's plate rolling mill 5000 is expected gradually to reach its designed capacity of 100,000-120,000 mt of plate per month.
