For the fourth consecutive month, apparent rebar consumption in Mexico registered growth. In September it increased 16.2 percent, year-over-year, to 345,000 metric tons (mt), according to data from the Mexican Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (Canacero) reviewed by SteelOrbis.
Rebar is the fourth largest finished steel product with the highest consumption in Mexico and the first in production.
In September, rebar production returned to the negative trend with a decrease of 0.6 percent, year-over-year, to 334,000 mt. This production volume is the second lowest so far this year, the minimum was in May with 331,000 mt.
In exports, the volume of rebar decreased 26.3 percent, totaling 28,000 mt. This volume contrasts with the 77,000 mt exported in May of last year.
In the accumulated January-September period, rebar consumption in Mexico increased 10.8 percent, year-over-year, to 3.09 million mt and production decreased 0.9 percent to 3.24 million mt.
According to industry data, the steel producers that manufacture rebar are ArcelorMittal, DeAcero, Gerdau Corsa, Grupo Acerero, Grupo Simec, Ternium and Tyasa.
