According to media reports, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that the European Union (EU) should be exempted from the US government’s new tariffs on steel imports from all countries except Mexico and Canada.

Speaking at an event in Munich, on Friday, March 9, Merkel said, “The best thing would be if the EU could be excluded. But if talks fail, we, in Europe, can of course also react.”

Meanwhile, Georg Streiter, a spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said at a news briefing on Friday that the tariffs have nothing to do with the security of the United States. “The European Union has decided to respond clearly to the US measures and as the federal government we support this position,” Mr. Streiter added.
