Russian mining and steelmaking company Mechel has launched the reconstructed coke-oven battery No. 5 at its subsidiary Mechel-Coke. All eight coke-oven batteries are now operational.

The launch of the new coke-oven battery with an annual capacity of 470,000 mt of coke enables the company to increase production of coke and chemicals, ensuring the self-sufficiency of Mechel's Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant and Southern Urals Nickel Plant.

The reconstruction of the battery has tripled the capacity and, when the battery No. 5 reaches full capacity, Mechel-Coke will be able to produce 3.1 million mt per year. The reconstruction works cost RUR 1.8 billion ($56.2 million).
