Liberty Primary Steel, part of UK-based GFG Alliance, has announced that it has signed contracts with Italian plantmaker Danieli and China-based global engineering service provider CISDI Engineering, for partnering in the transformation of its iconic Whyalla plant in South Australia. The company has invested £340 million in the project.

While Danieli will be constructing a new rail and structural heavy section mill, CISDI will be providing a pulverised coal injection plant for Liberty Steel’s transformation project.

Executive chairman of GFG Alliance, Sanjeev Gupta, said that Whyalla’s transformation will establish it as a viable and sustainable facility, producing 1.8 million mt of high-quality, high-end steel per year. He also added that, together with design, construction and commission stages, the whole upgrade process will last during the next three years.

Mr. Gupta said the investments would be financed through a combination of funding sources - including GFG’s own resources and vendor finance - and would likely require support from the South Australian and Australian federal governments.
