Russian pig iron and coking coal producer KOKS Group has announced its intention to commence its brownfield project to construct steel production facilities at its Tulachermet subsidiary.

KOKS Group intends to construct a new steel mill to produce long and structural steel products with the use of modern technologies at its Tulachermet subsidiary. The capacity of the new mill's first production stage is expected to be around 1 million mt per year of continuously cast square billets. 80 percent of the furnace charge for steel production will be captive hot pig iron with the remainder being cold charge in the form of scrap and other materials.

The main technological parameters of the mill are still to be determined. Negotiations have started with potential equipment and technology suppliers such as Siemens, SMS Goup, Danieli, Tenova, STG and SYTCO. By autumn this year, the construction site is to be determined, while the feasibility study is also to be completed by then. The construction period for the new mill's first production stage will be around three years.
