According to the statistics released by the Italian steel producers' association Federacciai, in 2009 Italy's steel product imports reached 12.55 million metric tons, decreasing by 43.9 percent, while its steel product exports totaled 12.58 million metric tons, down 29.3 percent, both compared to the previous year.
In the year in question, Italy's semi-finished steel product imports reached 2.62 million metric tons, down 50.6 percent year on year. Meanwhile, the country's semi-finished steel product exports amounted to 570,000 metric tons, down 40.9 percent year on year.
Last year, Italy's imports of long products decreased by 40.6 percent to 1.65 million metric tons, while its long product exports totaled 3.18 million metric tons, down 37.9 percent, both compared to 2008.
On the other hand, during the given year, Italy's flat product imports reached 7.16 million metric tons, down 41 percent year on year, while its flat product exports amounted to 4.87 million metric tons, with a year-on-year decrease of 25.3 percent.
