In January this year, Italy's steel imports from non-European Union (EU) countries totaled 1.290 million metric tons, up 15.5 percent, while its steel exports to non-EU destinations amounted to 282,000 metric tons, up 3.7 percent, both year on year, as announced by the Italian steel producers association Federacciai.

In particular, imports of long products from non-EU countries decreased by 81.2 percent year on year, mainly due to a decrease in wire rod imports, which were down 92.9 percent year on year to 2,000 mt. Flat steel imports in the same month rose by 15.2 percent year on year. Among the most imported flat steel products from non-EU countries in the given period were coils (455,000 mt), cold rolled plate (81,000 mt) and hot dip galvanized plate (58,000 mt).

Concerning Italian exports to non-EU countries in the first month of 2019, long product exports decreased by 16.7 percent, while flat product exports declined by 18.2 percent, year on year. In particular, rebar exports decreased by 16.1 percent to 26,000 mt, wire rod exports declined by 28.6 percent to 20,000 mt, while steel coil exports were down 40 percent to 9,000 mt, all year on year.
