Iron ore mine proposed for Wisconsin

Wisconsin-based privately held mining company, Gogebic Taconite, is aiming to develop an open-pit iron ore mine in the Penokee mountain range in Ashland and Iron counties in Northern Wisconsin.

Gogebic has purchased the option to lease the mineral rights on 22,000 acres in the two counties. Mining the location isn't set to begin for a while, as it will take approximately five to seven years to obtain all necessary permits.

The plans gained local support as Matthew Fifield, a spokesman for Gogebic, commented that the mine will employ hundreds of workers in the area.
