Iron ore imports at Zhangjiagang port remain strong

The application of the import licensing system on iron ore imports had no noticeable effect on iron ore imports at China's Zhangjiagang port. The latest statistics from customs show that imports for April and May 2005 reached 700'000 tons with a trade value of $60 million. With the April-May figures, total imports for the first five months reached 1.72 million tons and $150 million in trade value, nearly double what the port recorded during the same period in 2004. Jiangsu-based Shagang Group Corp. and Yonghua Steel Group Corp. are the main companies that import iron ore via Zhangjiagang.
