Iran launches country’s largest sponge iron plant

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday formally inaugurated production operations at the country's largest and most advanced sponge iron producing plant at Khuzestan Steel.

The new iron making plant, which was constructed by an Iranian consortium on EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract basis within a four-year period, has a designed annual capacity of one million mt of sponge iron.
 
With the coming on stream of its new iron making project and the upgrading of its steelmaking plant, Khuzestan Steel will have an overall annual production capacity of 3.4 million mt.
