According to preliminary customs data, India imported 5.03 million mt of iron ore in the past four months. During the period from April to July 2018, the countries of origin were 3.23 million mt (64 percent) from Australia, 1.18 million mt (23 percent) from South Africa, 0.45 million mt (9 percent) from Brazil, and the remaining 4 percent or 0.17 million mt from Canada. Approximately 2.47 million mt of iron ore was imported in April and May while 2.56 million mt was imported in June and July.
Additionally, 2.83 million mt (56 percent) of the iron ore imports came through the Krishnapatnam port is in the state of Andhra Pradesh on the south eastern side of India facing the Bay of Bengal while 1.35 million mt (27 percent) of the iron ore imports came through the Jaigarh port on the south west side of India. The remaining 0.85 million mt of iron ore imports came through ports such as Kandla, Mormugao, Mundra and several others.
