India to ban all steel imports noncompliant with BIS standards

India’s Ministry of Steel And Mines will shortly issue a notification imposing a blanket ban on all steel imports that do not comply with the standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), a ministry official said on Friday, December 18.

The official said that, while the Indian government has already imposed restrictions on imports of some 16 steel products that do not comply with the BIS standards, the restrictions will be extended to cover all steel products under a newly issued Steel and Steel Products Quality Control Order.

He went on to say that such a restriction will have a far reaching impact on limiting the inflow of cheap steel imports since most foreign steel companies do not have certification from the BIS nor do they adhere to the standards set by the institution.

Importers will be given three months from the date of issuance of the new notification so that current import contracts will not be affected, he added.
