An expert committee created under the Indian Ministry of Steel has revised India's production figure for crude steel in 2006 calendar year to 49.45 million metric tons as opposed to 44 million metric tons in the pre-revised data, thus moving the country from seventh to fifth place in the global ranking.

In addition, the committee has stated that during the 2006-2007 fiscal year India produced 51.906 million metric tons of finished steel products (alloy and non-alloy).

Meanwhile the domestic steel consumption during the period in question totaled 46.143 million metric tons.
