India ferrous scrap imports dominated by containers

According to provisional data from Indian customs, India is expected to import 5.2 million mt of scrap in the calendar year 2018, an uptick of 14 percent compared to the 4.57 million mt of scrap imported in 2017. In 2016, India imported 5.35 million mt and 5.74 million mt in 2015.

Bulk scrap imports in 2015 were 0.72 million mt (13 percent), 0.80 million mt in 2016 (15 percent), 0.38 million mt in 2017 (8 percent), and 0.52 million mt in 2018 (10 percent).

May, July, and November 2018 were the months with the largest imports of bulk scrap in the year with 169,513 mt, 126,618 mt, and 126,440 mt respectively.
