Illinois, US-based Scrap Metal Services, LLC has completed the purchase for the assets of the Port of Indiana processing facility of Behr Iron and Steel, Inc., a subsidiary of Illinois metal recycler Joseph Behr and Sons.

According to a company statement, the acquisition was completed on December 31, 2010 and will complement and add significant processing capabilities to current Scrap Metal Services facilities within the northwest Indiana and Chicago, Illinois regions. "Behr's Port of Indiana facility location represents a strategic fit to our northwest Indiana volume growth," said Jeffry Gertler, chief executive officer of Scrap Metal Services, LLC.

Scrap Metal Services also opened up a commercial operation in July 2010 in Malcolm, Alabama, which is adjacent to the new steel mill of German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp in Calvert, Alabama.
