France-based machine industry company Fives Group has announced the signing of a major contract covering the design and supply of advanced coil finishing lines for automotive steel applications in Hyundai Steel and POSCO’s planned Louisiana mill.
Low-carbon flat steel facility with strong automotive focus
As previously reported by SteelOrbis, the new plant represents an investment of $5.82 billion and will produce 650,000 mt of hot rolled coil and 2.05 million mt of cold rolled coil per year. The producer stated that the facility will utilize a direct reduction plant-electric arc furnace route to manufacture low-carbon steel. Approximately 70 percent of total output, equivalent to 1.8 million mt annually, will be dedicated to automotive-grade steel.
Hyundai Steel added that the project aims to strengthen a US-based supply chain for advanced automotive steel, addressing demand from global automakers and supporting broader distribution across North America.
Fives to supply advanced coil finishing technologies
According to Fives Group, the company has been chosen as the technology provider, supplying advanced coil processing solutions as part of the project. Fives stated that it brings extensive experience in coil processing technologies, with recent project deliveries in the United States, Mexico and China.
Frédéric Sanchez, chairman and CEO of Fives Group, said the project will play a key role in advancing automotive steel production in the United States and strengthening cooperation with Hyundai Steel and POSCO.
