German-based Elbe Stahlwerke Feralpi to install EAF heat recovery system

Tenova Re Energy, a part of Genoa, Italy-based plantmaker Tenova Group, has announced the signing of a contract with Brescia-based Italian steelmaker Feralpi Siderurgica to supply an electric arc furnace (EAF) heat recovery system for its German plant Elbe Stahlwerke Feralpi GmbH.

Commenting on the deal, Ralf Granderath, CEO of Tenova Re Energy, said, "Up to 20 MW from the off-gas of the existing EAF will be recovered turning the Feralpi EAF into the probably most energy efficient EAF worldwide."

The recovered energy will be converted into steam, which will be partly sold to a local energy carrier and partly led to an ORC turbine generating 2.5 MW of electrical energy. This is the first time superheated steam will be generated from an EAF.

The system is part of a solution package of Tenova aimed at increasing productivity, optimizing energy consumption and reducing costs. The Elbe Stahlwerke Feralpi plant will be commissioned in early 2013.
