Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic’s capital, built fewer homes in 2016 than it did in 2002, according to a report from the country’s Housing Builders and Promoters Association, Acoprovi. The report was sponsored by Gerdau’s subsidiary in the country, Gerdau Metaldom.

A major consumer of steel, the civil construction industry in Santo Domingo is mainly concentrated at the home building sector. According to Acoprovi, office, commerce and industrial buildings account for only 4.5 percent of the capital’s total constructions.

Most of Santo Domingo’s home buildings are located in the East and North parts of the city. Low-cost homes are popular in those two areas, which explains the concentration of home buildings in the city.

The country’s steel association, Adoacero, said the research made by Acoprovi may help all segments to measure the market growth and the opportunities arising for new construction in Santo Domingo.
