EUROFER: EC’s roadmap on resource efficiency applicable in steel industry

On September 20, the European Commission announced a 'roadmap' aimed at transforming Europe's economy into a sustainable one by 2050, outlining how Europe can achieve a resource-efficient growth, since rising demand around the globe is increasing pressure on the environment, and creating greater competition for resources.

The European Steel Association (EUROFER) welcomed the roadmap introduced by the EC, stating that technology-related measures are more applicable to manufacturing industries than caps or taxes.

EUROFER's general director Gordon Moffat said that the roadmap is also appropriate for steel industry, since steel is 100 percent recyclable and it can be recycled over and over again without losing its properties. Therefore it contributes significantly to the long-term conservation of the fundamental resources for future generations. Moffat also noted that about 45 percent of the total EU steel production is recycled steel scrap.

In a different statement, EUROFER announced that its identity name has been changed to the European Steel Association from the European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries, keeping the missions of the organization unchanged. The new name reflects the structure of the membership of the association which is composed primarily of the steel producers as well as the national steel associations
