EU new car registrations fall to historic low in January

The latest figures issued by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) show that European Union (EU) new car registrations recorded in January this year totaled 885,159 units, up 10.7 percent compared to December last year and decreasing by 8.7 percent year on year, falling to a historic low for a month of January, since the start of the series in 1990.

In January, the UK was the only major market to post growth with an increase of 11.5 percent, while passenger car demand decreased by 8.6 percent in Germany, 9.6 percent in Spain, 15.1 percent in France and 17.6 percent in Italy, all year on year. In absolute figures, Germany remained the largest market with 192,090 new registrations, followed by the UK with 143,643 units, France with 124,798 units and Italy with 113,525 units. Spain registered 49,671 new cars, which was slightly less than Belgium which registered 50,684 units.
